Stared items (basic star) not showing highlight color in classic mode

What is the problem? Describe completely:

Minimalist version   -0.5.17
Relevant core module -gmail | dashboard | main
Chrome version       -16.0.912.63
Operating System     -OS X 10.6.8
Language             -english
Google Apps user?    -no
Other extensions     -yes, about 35 others.  Not going to list them here unless 
you REALLY want me to

Please provide any additional information below and attach screenshots if
relevant.

My browser has been properly showing the starred item highlights but stopped 
doing so a couple of days ago.  I've uninstalled/reinstalled, restarted chrome, 
changed the highlight color to something different than the light yellow 
default, all to no avail.  The other highlight settings seem to work fine, but 
the starred highlight does not.  I have only one star active (i.e. not the 
several star selectable option).  Any help would be very useful, since I've 
been using the highlight to help me manage my mail and without it, I find it 
partially crippling.

Update to this problem--  it's only occurring in the old gmail format, not the 
new format

Thanks for the clarification. The classic look is not supported.
