starter code import is stuck/taking forever #2552

Closed numerator closed 4 years ago

numerator commented 4 years ago

Describe the bug We have created a classroom at https://classroom.github.com/classrooms/59929502-507-w20 and one assignment. We are testing the student import functionality and it is stuck and/or taking forever to import the starter code. The starter code is just two files, both of which are very small.

I see that this issue has been opened and declared resolved several times in the past, so I'm creating a new issue (again), since it seems to be unresolved for me (and my TA tsuyoshikano).

To Reproduce Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Click the invite link: https://classroom.github.com/a/hYazo3yK
  2. Wait forever

Expected behavior A clear and concise description of what you expected to happen.

Screenshots If applicable, add screenshots to help explain your problem.

Additional context Add any other context about the problem here.

It finally worked for tsuyoshikano after about 20 minutes. Still not working for me. We are hoping to release this assignment to 140 students later today so would like to know if this is going to be an issue for all of them.

Hello ๐Ÿ‘‹ What kind of starter code importer are you using? Template repos or source code? We recommend template repos as it is faster and more reliable than source code.

Here is a more in-depth page for helping you set that up: https://classroom.github.com/help/using-template-repos-for-assignments

Not helpful. I tried the template approach last semester and it didn't work. I had to delay an assignment. Don't have time to risk that again. The old way used to work and it should still work.

@numerator Template repositories are the recommended way to go. They're much more efficient and less error-prone than the older method which we're looking at deprecating. The doc Stephanie linked will show how to use them. You said they don't work, do you have specifics?

Another team is responsible for the older import functionality, I've reached out to them to see what's going on. We'll update here when we have more information.

Ok Iโ€™ll give the templates a try again. If I have troubles I will document them and open a new issue. The import seems to be working but VERY slowly so weโ€™re ok for now.
