Axcient / GitHub HR Session #24

Running an experiment...having the Axcient HR team come up to GitHub for a two hour working session/brainstorming discussion... would love to keep doing this with other HR teams who want to try this!

Initial list of topics from here. We will need to refine once the brainstorm is over, but ...

  1. On-Boarding - what's working/not working when you bring new employees on board. Remote employee issues v. people working in HQ?
  2. Culture - How are you actively maintaining and enhancing your culture as you grow?
  3. Learning - how to build a learning-focused org with limited financial resources and demands on employees and leaders' time
  4. Performance management - how to build the right amount of process and discipline here

Oh, I am really interested in reading or listening to these brainstorming sessions. I am not in SF. Not even in the US.

Plese let me know if there is a way to know the answers to these questions.

Is there going to be a stream of the session? I'd love to participate if possible.

We're based in Colima, México, so video conference is my only way to go.

Sure thing at this point with the number of people in the room, anyone can join live on a BlueJeans as well that we will set up!

Re-grounding on why we are experimenting with this

Agenda/Flow for this first session

  1. On-Boarding - what's working/not working when you integrate new employees? What do your programs look like? Is it working? Does it differ for remote hires vs. those who are based in SF? What creative ideas are you testing out that are working?
  2. Performance Feedback Processes - the tide is definitely changing here from “annual reviews” to more of a frequent feedback dialogue mentality. Less forms, less corporate america process. How are you guys handling that, what are you doing, and where do you think you are going with these processes?

Hey Kelli & All,

Thanks for a fun and rewarding discussion two weeks ago. I wanted to drop a note to share the (Top 5) insights I gained listening to the GitHub & CrowdInteractive HR teams talk about on-boarding. FWIW, here is what I took away --

  1. Start with a goal for on-boarding. What do you want to accomplish on Day One for new employees? By Week One? By Month One? 90 days out? Build a plan and set measurable goals to make sure that plan comes to life
  2. Be great during the period from offer acceptance to Day One. Find ways to connect with your to-be-started employees during the typical "black hole" period. This isn;t about getting them to start working for you early or even getting them up to speed faster, per se. It's more about getting them fired up to work with you for the long-term
  3. Be authentic, build strong connections and spend the right amount of time (lots) with new hires. You never get that 2nd chance to make the great 1st impression
  4. Buddies are huge. There isn't another person in the organization that will have a bigger impact on the effectiveness and retention of the new employee. Select, train and empower the new hire buddies wisely
  5. Travel isn't dead. GitHub relies on bringing people to HQ to on-board properly. This investment makes sense. If you can afford, it ... have your new hires travel early and often during your 30/60/90 day on-boarding period

There are way more insights I could included, but I decided to stick to my "Top Five".

The Axcient team and I appreciated the chance to interact with all of you very much. Hope we get to do this again soon. I like(d) our plan to focus on performance management as an engagement tool. Let's roll. :)
