This is helpful and I'm using this instead of 0.12, but I use Java 8 too

I have back-ported this to Java5 compliance... not sure of what else is required to get the patch into the master branch. Thoughts, @kevinsawicki ?

It'd be nice to get this merged. I'm running into the same issue as described in #114, and this PR resolves it for me.
