I post this issue here as a help for others who might run into the same issue.
TL;DR: Remove the dlig setting if using, then restart VSCodium. If this does not help, reinstall the fonts.
I observed a weird behavior in VSCodium after upgrading to release 1.100: When using Neon, many/all special characters were replaced by random other special characters, rendering much of the text unreadable.
With Argon, everything is fine.
What I did to resolve this:
Already removed the dlig setting as per the release notes -> this was NOT the culprit
Reload VSCodium window -> No change
Uninstall and Reinstall the fonts (via Homebrew) -> No change
