@bnferguson and @sachinr are looking forward to visiting Copenhagen in a few weeks to take everyone through an introduction to Git and GitHub. In order to help us make the session as valuable as possible to all attendees, please leave a comment below with the following information:

No experience yet, no certain goal (except for getting to know Git/GitHub of course), watch FC Basel 1893 play Champions League

stefanfk commented 9 years ago

my experiences are quite basic so far. I already got an account and I have a local GitHub Client installed. a better understanding of GitHub would be great and especially some ideas how it may be used within the context of research data. sailing on the Kiel fjord, even if I am a beginner.

Hi!

I have some previous, very basic, experience of using git. When I was writing my master's thesis, I used it for version control and backup. Recently I have also been doing some work with git and GitHub in my work, submitting translations to OJS.

I look forward to learn more and deepen my knowledge of git and GitHub.

Best thing to do in Malmö is probably to go to the Kallbadhuset bathhouse in the winter, where you can take a cold bath in Öresund and then get warm again in the sauna.

Hi, I haven´t used Github before other than to follow projects and download material. My goal would be to learn how to use it in the context of managing a software development project.

The best thing to do in my hometown: start by drinking a pisco sour and then you will have plenty of fun ideas afterwards https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pisco_Sour :)

Looking forward to learn more about it though!

Hi, except for downloading repositories and reading documentations I have no experience with Github. I want to know in which ways Github can support my daily work. In my adopted home town you can chill at one of the lake sides of our many lakes. Or do a kayak trip through the city.

Greetings from Leipzig!

Hi, I have some very basic knowledge on GitHub, and I expect to learn how to get the most out of it when not working as a full-time developer. In Stockholm, just walking or running along the water through town is beautiful.

Hi,

I don't have any experience with GitHub, looks very interesting though. In Copenhagen go to Oysters & Grill (http://cofoco.dk/da/restauranter/oysters-and-grill/) for great seafood and steaks

Hi. I have experience with git and other version control systems (even SCCS lol) out of curiosity, but I have too little experience of teamwork with git/GitHub. I'm hoping to get more experience on that side at some point, but at DSL4L I hope to gain understanding about what it would be like to store data, not code, on git/GitHub or VCS in general.

I've lived in Copenhagen since last Sunday. The best thing to do here is to help me find a home, preferably a flatshare with some reasonable people in Nørrebro, Vesterbro, Østerbro or Ama'r, in 4000-4500dkk range. I'm a nice and considerate flatmate, merrily studying at the Royal School of Information Sciences (RSLIS=IVA) at Copenhagen University, and also at the IT&Cognition -programme, I'm on exchange from University of Tampere School of Information Sciences. Male, from Helsinki ex-librarian, future researcher/freelancer/awesome science dude. Thanks, I appreciate your help

No experience, except hearing from other people that it's very handy and looking at some of their screens. Had plans already to have a go at it, so this course comes in handy. Goal: learn the concepts behind it and how to use it. In Delft: climb to the top of main church tower. Afterwards, drink beer in one of the many cafes as a reward. And don't buy Delft Blue, it's only for tourists and it's a ripoff.

Hi,

I have just created an account for GitHub so I have no experience.

I hope I will be able to use GitHub to find useful scripts and code and to share ideas with people who have an interest in data sources, web scrapping, automation, data cleaning, data exploration, analysis, visualization etc.

One of my favorite things to do is to go around Copenhagen by bike. I would suggest that you rent some electric bikes on Gobike/Bycyklen and explore Copenhagen in detail. You should at least try it for ten minutes, which you can do for free!

No Git/GitHub experience at all. Goal - to learn more about Git/Github- and to not be scared of all the stuff cool, rich and beautiful techies do with the data. To do in Copenhagen. Join me Sunday at four pm for the FC Copenhagen vs Aalborg game at Parken. Lots of beer and lots of disillusioned old men like me.

vcruzdelvalle commented 9 years ago

Hi everyone!

-Just joined GitHub, so this is basically my first encounter with it. -Hopefully being able to incorporate it into my work -Simply take a trip around Copenhagen (by bike of course. You can rent a bike several places), enjoy a stroll along the lakes combining Vesterbro, Frederiksberg, Nørrebro and Østerbro. Grab lunch at a café/restaurant with outdoor seating and enjoy the vibrant city. Looking for something to do this Friday? Take an evening out and visit the amusement park from 1843, Tivoli Gardens. Danish band Quadron will be playing there at 10pm, bonus!

Hi everyone,

@bnferguson and I would like to thank you all again for the participating and being so active in the Git/GitHub marathon today at the DTU.

In total you've opened 21 pull requests using the Pull and Fork model. Given that most of you never heard of version control before today, being able to grasp all these concepts to a point where you were able to do all of the following, by yourselves, within 15 minutes is mind blowing to @bnferguson and myself:

Thank you very much! For those that had their pull requests merged (check your notifications), you'll be able to see your edits live at: http://githubteacher.github.io/octo-recipes/

If you with to learn more about GitHub our documentation is pretty good, but if you want you can also cc @bitoiu in your issues and pull requests and I'll try to help as much as possible.

emmawojda commented 9 years ago

@bitoiu Thank you for the good introduction yesterday - the way you taught it made it feel really easy, and we were able to reproduce again today

bitoiu commented 9 years ago

Hi @emmawojda, very glad to hear that! You have great speakers today which helps as well  :+1:
