error: %define variable 'parse.error' is not used #6

Get an error when using an older bison (2.7.12-4996). Ok with bison 3.7.6.

what system are you using with such an old bison version?

ah, my apologies. I just noticed I was actually calling an old bison that was in my personal bin dir instead of the 3.0.4 system version.
