Spilling tea on OneNote #2366

Problem: None Like most of you i suspect, I find MS OneNote to be a useless piece of garbage. However, I finally realize where it might be a benefit: make a note here, log into outlook at another location. Same note is there in onedrive thing. But that's because MS / OneDrive etc is all part of that operating system (basically). I guess you could say it's a bit like the fight against Internet Explorer when it was part of Win 98/ XP or whatever (i don't really remember, and I had sense enough to realize IE wasn't the only option, so that didn't affect me).

Solution: unknown Probably no solution. I was going to say provide ability to import / export to that format. Remember, this is not a OneNote endorsement. I only ever used it once, yesterday, for making some notes on-site at a new job. I was reading through some of the "Reviews" (because of course, you can only install it via MS Store where people complain about that very fact/ that it wants to install MS 365 etc.). The die hard OneDrive people are apparently disgruntled that MS changed the interface, and there's no longer a way to export anything from OneNote. So, since you can't even do it from the native app, I can't see spending any amount of time or effort to affect some sort of compatibility. Not to mention, they're quite different. OneNote isnt exactly hierarchical.

Check in here. I posted something about it on my Mastodon thing: https://social.vivaldi.net/@ajaxStardust/111194298950292236

Why are you cluttering up the forum with Microsoft issues, then saying there is probably no solution? This distracts from real Cherrytree issues that do have solutions. It also wastes the readers and devlopers time just reading it. Use dropbox if you need this functionality to go from machine to machine at different locations. Meanwhile find a Microsoft forum.

@RFImages Hey that's big and exciting news then, isn't it? I have been enthusiastic in support of CherryTree for quite some time.

I regret this sort of nonsense simply turns me off to the whole thing.

Best wishes @giuspen . Please email me directly if you'd like to discuss.

Cheers all!

Hi @ajaxStardust I'm not sure what this topic is about but if it is integrated support of synch with a cloud, it will likely happen in the future but there is not ETA yet.

For the time being, as stated from @RFImages you can use Dropbox or GoogleDrive or many others free services are available.

MJimitater commented 6 months ago

@RFImages Intersting, I never thought of it! Do you have experience with using dropbox as a cloud sync? Does it work well? Any caveats? @giuspen would you recommend to giving it a try?

giuspen commented 6 months ago

@MJimitater I used Dropbox many years ago while more recently I have always been using Google drive so I don't know how good Dropbox is today.

ajaxStardust commented 6 months ago

Any of that stuff is super easy to enable for creating a synchronized CherryTree which can be acessed from any location, just like you might with iCloud, OneDrive, Dropbox.

Many apps will automatically sync changes. The idea is to have a file saved in the correct location (e.g. a Dropbox folder, or MEGA) so your preferred cloud sync app can recognize that the file has in fact changed since the last sync.

I prefer MEGA for its ease of use, and the way it integrates into the desktop. Just save your CherryTree files in a folder inside of the MEGA sync folder.

The Desktop app is simple to use, and IS THE KEY TO THE AUTOMATIC SYNC that you wish to achieve.

Get MEGA desktop sync app HERE: https://mega.io/desktop?aff=NEp5BywXGio

I created a little how-to video for everyone, to demonstrate how easy it is. NOTE: If you do go with MEGA, understand that what you see in this vid is not exactly the preferred configuration. I think it creates a folder called "MEGASync". I forget exactly what you'll see in your on-line or "cloud" view, vs what you'll see on your desktop, but this will get you started, and it WILL sync. But, you'll probably want to tweak it so it's not so janky like my demonstrated setup. Enjoy, and happy sync'ing! :D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QWg9MjyuNU

Best regards!

@ajaxStardust Glad you found a solution. Sorry for spilling tea on you, I was in a bad mood that day.

I find Dropbox to work well for these types of things, it adds some options to the right click menu when you right click a file such as copy dropbox link, make available off line (if you also want a copy on your local machine), turn it off if you don't want to fill up your hard drive with the dropbox files. You can log in on any machine to a website to access your files or install the app if you want a more permanent access. - It creates a dropbox folder in file explorer, just as if it were a nother hard drive. Also works to back things up in the cloud obviously.

But I am sure there are others that work just as well.

Check it out. I uploaded a little "how-to" thing to YouTube. If the user isn't well acquainted with the way those cloud services work ( @giuspen -- you mentioned you'd never thought of it. Well, just watch that video! :) ... and how to actually utilize the cloud storage service for your benefit for something like this (e.g. to maintain a file which you can use from any location, and restore your CherryTree to as it is from your "home" location, or whatever)

I edited my post above, to include the link to YouTube.

Cheers!

(aside: also, i'm at g/f place, on her "all-in-one" desktop thing. 4GB RAM, so you know the routine. That vid is mucho edited to clip out the spinning mouse pointer. oh gawd. i hate running out of processing power and RAM! and i'm NOT even doing anything processor intensive! haha)

@RFImages you were in a bad mood? Here's what I was doing that day. With all of the hydromorphone, and etc., I don't know that I can say I was exactly in a "bad mood", but... hehe... have a look: https://social.vivaldi.net/@ajaxStardust/111631986738998972

Omg @ajaxStardust I have to remember that no matter how bad my day is going, there is always someone having a worse one! I hope you are recovering well.

LOL. No worries, @RFImages - I'm pretty much on the verge from the moment I wake up, and crazy to boot. One never knows what sort of nonsense might come out of me at any given moment. And then we all get on with our days. And document it in CherryTree!!! @giuspen :D

So, why "R F Images"? Are you in Graphic Design?
