Basic Usage - Seeking Recommended #2544

OBJECTIVE: It occurs to me that I'd like to use CherryTree to manage 2FA , and the like. API Secret keys and such because I'm reminded that CherryTree can save the database encrypted.

I dont necessarily want to have my regular CherryTree with the encrypted file however, as I share it now via MEGA between a few diff systems, and it works nicely!

But, for "secret" or private, sensitive information, perhaps I'd like to save and load an encrypted setup, separately.

Has anyone a recommended best practice for that type of use? E.g. Step one, with CherryTree open and your regular database loaded, then do step two. Step two is...

I ask because in my experience, it seems that CherryTree can sometimes prefer a certain order of operations maybe to ensure the resulting configuration is exactly as desired.

Thank you!

In my opinion do not treat CherryTree as a beast of burden loaded with more “features”.

Make it work with other prime apps to achieve your aims in a toolchain.

For the scenario posted my suggestion is open a free account with Proton Mail.

Explore how to use 2FA and Proton Pass.

Explore how to use Proton Vault.

Share CherryTree files securely through Proton Vault.

Perhaps what you are looking for here is the possibility to encrypt / password protect only a node, not the whole tree. This has been requested before, it is something I will try to address in 2025
