As noted in ticket #45 then mtex2MML takes special care to allow HTML tags within math segments, for example: $$<em>\sin(x)</em>$$
This is a problem when using strict inequalities in math expressions and I don't need this functionality. I would love if it could be an option some day in the future. (Until then, thanks for making inequalities work when using a bit of extra whitespace.)
