USB Hub not working with BeagleBone Black #119

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. plugged in usb hub
2.
3.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

I want to have more than 1 usb port. Bought this hub:
http://www.microcenter.com/product/360454/7-Port_USB_20_Hub_with_Power_Adapter

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Beaglebone Black A5B. Just upgraded to latest Angstrom

Please provide any additional information below.

I cannot get any hub I own to work with my Beaglebone Black. I have tried two
powered and one not powered. I plug it in then boot the beaglebone. After that
nothing works that is plugged into the hub. If I unplug the hub and plug a
mouse directly in then the mouse works. Any suggestions? Do I need a driver?

Cut the red wire between the powered Hub and BBB. The powered Hub MUST NOT feed
the BBB.

Cutting the red wire made my Belkin Flex Hub unuseable. I added a SMD diode
between the red wire and the board.

I cut the wire on my cheap AC powered USB hub and it did the trick. Is your
Belkin Flex Hub an AC powered hub or not? If it is not AC powered that is why
it is not working, no power is getting to it.

The external 5V power supply to the USB hub is optional. Without the diode it
didn't work at all. Adding the diode makes it useable for the BBB with and
without external power supply connected. And it still works on a regular pc.

@florian
Can you explain what the diode is for, and which way round you connected it?

This is a pretty weird quirk, I have to damage my functional USB hub to make it
with the BBB
