Mumbai's train exit soflock in Freelancer #84

Open VoodooHillbilly opened 2 months ago

VoodooHillbilly commented 2 months ago

IOI removed the train exit in the Freelancer version of Mumbai to avoid a softlock following the cinematic, rather than fixing it.

RDIL commented 2 months ago

What causes the softlock?

Ocean-Minnow commented 2 months ago

I can't say I've encountered this issue myself. I know there were patch notes that said it was removed, but I've never had a problem using the exit. There's no big exit marker, but I can still just walk up to the train and choose to exit.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HkIjxL79ebw (Exit happens within the first 30 seconds, the rest of the video is just me loading into the safehouse to show there's no softlock)

I do have some mods installed, but none of them should be affecting this.

It was the crash the train through Vanya's HQ and ride the train out cutscene causing the problem. I remembered wrong and thought they disabled the train exit entirely. Although in my defense, the patch notes were a bit vague: https://ioi.dk/hitman/patch-notes/2023/hitman-woa-may-patch-notes

Train Exit

We’ve removed the moving train exit in Mumbai (Freelancer mode only) to prevent an issue where the game would softlock following the cinematic and then consider the mission to have failed upon a forced restart.

Ocean-Minnow commented 2 months ago

I did think that was what they meant by that too! I've been confused by that for almost a year now apparently.

I did remember that the problem was the crash the train & ride out exit, but I thought from their description they disabled all exiting by train. And like you said, there's no exit marker. Although that's probably because you can exit almost anywhere along the tracks. I'm almost never in that area when I finish a mission, so I never bothered testing out the regular train exit.

I think there should be an exit icon somewhere along the tracks. Probably in the open section before the restricted area. If the crashing train exit is fixed, should an exit icon appear at the switch when 47 picks up a lever?

I believe in normal Mumbai, there's an exit icon that moves along with the train. I'm not 100% sure though.

The train crash exit is only during a cutscene AFAIK, so I think it's fine to not have an icon, even if it gets fixed. It always felt like an Easter Egg exit to me, although I'm not sure if it "really" counts as one. :p

I replayed normal and Freelancer Mumbai to verify. Exit icons do appear on the train cars in both versions, but they're only visible when you're already close enough for the exit prompt to show up. Which entirely defeats the purpose of the exit icon. Kind of subjective, but maybe those should be made visible further away and added to the map.

Kind of feels like an Easter Egg even though derailing the train is one of the Assassination Challenges. But other secret exit icons appear when they're unlocked: Pale Rider's car, Blake's swan dive, NY stockbroker, Haven's inflatable crocodile, etc. It might be more effort than it's worth, idk.
