I access my own feeds from my RSS reader (CommaFeed) via the RSS widget and only display unread ones.
This also works very well, only when there are no unread feeds do I get the same red message failed to retrieve any content as when a feed is not available.
The message is basically correct, but in this case can't you have it displayed in a different color and change the text to "No feeds available" or something similar?
Red error messages are always frightening at first glance :D
