Icons Breaking The Rules! #967

Closed cr0w-69 closed 11 years ago

cr0w-69 commented 11 years ago

Hey some of the Icons i have don't exactly follow the "Glasklart Guidelines"

The ones i have are the following: Age Of Zombies - Aniversary Guitar Tabs

Just wanted to point this out.

jfelchner commented 11 years ago

@cr0w-69 sounds good, feel free to open icon requests for each one and we'll see about getting them updated.

Thanks!

@jfelchner : I think there is quite a lot breaking the actual rules, most of times for bad. But sometimes for good :

I think we are pushing a little bit to far on this "no transparency", I would be the first one to agree on "minimalism is not an omission" but I think it is easy to see that.

"no transparency"

I know you don't agree, but we're going to have to agree to disagree.

As for the icons above, the next time they are redone, they will have their semi-transparency removed. Or you can submit an icon update request and we'll do it sooner.

:-1:

@vinstic Ha ha no, cause I can't see rationale reason. Others might say because I'm :fr:, and we like to change the rules

jfelchner commented 11 years ago

@gaetan-petit oh hold on hold on.... wait for it... :)

jfelchner commented 11 years ago

This is why.

Not only does it look better in my opinion to have only one color (in most cases). But if we allowed grays, the above is the type of icon we would get all the time.

By having "The Rules" it means that even novices have a chance of being able to create a Glasklart icon if the icon is easy. If the icon is hard (like the one above) it means that we don't have to have a lengthy discussion (read: argument) with the contributor about why their icon won't work. We can just say "no grays allowed".

The icon above was his first attempt at a Glasklart icon and I wouldn't expect anything better. That is a HARD icon, but it's easier for us to say "no grays" than it is to say "Wwwwwwweeeeeeeeelllllllllllllllll in this case you can use a gray, but in this other case you can't."

gaetan-petit commented 11 years ago

@jfelchner Now I'm tempted to summarize you post by "you can use a gray" :grimacing: No just kidding I totally understand.

What is the process for requesting "special grey permission"? Look at Flickr or this request #1008

jfelchner commented 11 years ago

@gaetan-petit using "hatching" is something that we've just started looking into. @scottbuckley started it with a photos app (I can't remember which one) and it didn't break the rules but it also allowed us to have a way to differentiate the "colors" a bit. Of course you can go so far as the "hatching" loses all meaning and just looks gray like @rentiak did in #946.

I don't think we should do it very often, but it "hatching" definitely has its uses. I think #696 is a good example of where we could have used it.

gaetan-petit commented 11 years ago

@jfelchner yeah, I was just thinking the same with @rentiak icon he found the perfect workaround technique  I'm fine with your pov, hope you won't get mad if time to time I'll try some "illegal version" like in #1008

jfelchner commented 11 years ago

@gaetan-petit absolutely not! I perfectly happy to have "illegal" versions contributed. Someone may prefer them. Heck I prefer them sometimes. But they just won't be officially included in Glasklart.
