Role (role)⇔ Involved (involved)

Hi @fcbond and @goodmami , may I ask how to decide whether a lemma is an example of the Role-based relation?

For instance, we say pen is an instrument of to write, but when we search pen in wordnet, we cannot find the instrument role relation under the Synset relations section, so how can I decide wheether my examples are right for the relation or not?

Currently PWN has no role relations, so I think we will just have to take examples from the EWN documentation.

Do you mean the EWN general document? I have found out there are tests of Role-based relations, but only one example is given to each relation in the test, is that enough for our docs?

fcbond commented 4 years ago

That will have to do for the moment.

Perhaps we need a disclaimer somewhere saying that not all relations are used by the Princeton/English Wordnet, so some examples are just illustrative?

fcbond commented 3 years ago

Some of them appear in other wordnets, which I hope we can check soon.

But maybe in the preamble we should note that not all wordnets use all the roles.

In general I think it could be much clearer which wordnets use which roles, because a single wordnet generally includes only a fraction of those here. For example, the ability to hide all relations not used by some wordnet. But if we're including examples using English words or synsets and they are not actually present in the English wordnet, I think it is misleading. We should instead use an example from a wordnet that does have the relation, either in the original language or translated to English via the ILI. In the latter case, we should be clear that it is a translation and refer to the original wordnet.

Hi @fcbond some are in the morphosemantic links like "run/runner". Should we document these relations and incorporate them in the PWN data?

fcbond commented 3 years ago

There is external data for role links, both for English (from Christianne) and Japanese (from my student Ryan and I). We could make a new wordnet just adding these and use that for the relations. Anyone interested in doing this?

Do you mean to add more role-based relations to the wordnet? I can help after finishing the exisitng relations.

fcbond commented 3 years ago

Yes, that would be great. I had a student looking at this, I am just trying to get the latest updated list from him, then I will raise an issue on the English Wordnet.
