current data #13

Open kristinschrader opened 7 years ago

kristinschrader commented 7 years ago

Inquiry from Eric Anderson, GLERL. There is not current (as in the direction of the water) data on the GLOS portal, though there is on some of the buoys if you go back to their original sources. It looks like NBDC does not have current data either, so that might be why we are how we are, but it seems like that data should be included in the portal, partially because it is there, and partially because of oil spills.

How do we get it included?

Currents are there. You use the model(s). In this example, I chose GLCFS for Lake Erie and then added currents to the map.

The user can then use the virtual buoy option to map a parameter. They can save their virtual buoy as a permalink if they always want to go back to that same spot.

Or if they have an actual buoy that they've also added to the map, they also can now see currents: image

The user may be looking for currents measured at a buoy, not the forecast.

@tslawecki probably. But not something we've ever had (at least as far as I can see even popping over to the old portal). How do we determine the veracity of 'if you go to the original source' it is there? @kristinschrader maybe we need to ask Eric if he can provide us with an example of a buoy that does historically have that data so we can dig deeper? Assuming he is speaking of a GLERL buoy so that would help.

kristinschrader commented 7 years ago

I think he was looking at a MTU buoy in the straits to validate the GLERL current map. I get that we haven't had that before, but since the data is being collected I'm not sure why we wouldn't (or couldn't) serve it back out.

Conceptually not a problem, but it may take a bit of work.

it would be really useful to have a couple of example buoys so we can dig deeper into where this data is getting left off. @kristinschrader can you reach out (or would you like one of us to)?

How about your choice of...

45013 45014 45024 45029 45161 45163 45175

i checked those buoys out - none of them have currents data in the obs cache or in greatlakesbuoys.org. If they are collecting currents data, is it not getting submitted for some reason?

kristinschrader commented 7 years ago

I think, though I don't know, that they are collecting data because you can find their historical data.

I posit that NBDC just doesn't collect it, so it isn't getting on to GL buoys. That doesn't mean they (the buoys) aren't collecting that data, it just means we don't have it. From what I see as available parameters, current isn't there. So they could be collecting it and sending it, but if the database doesn't have a slot to receive it we will never see it.
