Long-term cardiovascular outcomes of COVID-19

Main Research Question and Contribution to the fields?

To determine risk and long-term (1-year) burden of cardiovascular events in post-acute infection of COVID-19.

Methods & Data

The data supports that post-acute infection with COVID-19, individuals have an increased risk and incidence of cardiovascular events regardless of hospitalization status. This is further increased if individuals were hospitalized and even more so if admitted to the ICU.

Authors' interpretation

I agree with the authors' interpretation of the data. It is very clear from the data presented that individuals who suffered infection of COVID-19 show an increased risk and incidence of cardiovascular episodes after more than a year of initial infection.

Enhancement or next experiment?

How these risks and incidences changed with the introduction of vaccinations. How are these in younger individuals with and without vaccinations.

confusion? Terms you don't understand?

I was very confused about what the authors' were referring to when they mentioned composite. I decided to assume it meant looking at the cardiovascular disease classifications more broadly. I was also unable to understand their hypothesis regarding odd- versus even-numbered calendar days of influenza vaccination. This made absolutely no sense to me whatsoever, and I do not understand why this was introduced into the discussion to begin with.

Have your own opinions or critiques

How did they control for confounding factors, such as PTSD, in the increased risk and incidence of cardiovascular events in this cohort, considering it was composed of military veterans?

I was also wondering if it was appropriate to use VA database as those who are veterans, and especially veterans who used VA services are not representative of the general population
