std/var - fix empty inputs not preserving single. made m class changing depend on nargout #83

i really hope this is the last thing i'll catch before the core push. saw the mean error too. looks like you're about to do a 1.5.4 release that'll include all of these fixes. I'll wait until release to do the upload to savannah just to establish a released baseline for the four functions.

Typically, the next release is scheduled for 31.3.2023, but since octave 8.1 is about to be release, I will try to push forward my todo list for the next release and if I can manage I will make the release earlier, but I doubt I can manage it before March. Since these four functions will stay shadowed in octave 8, I think it is better to leave some time into "production" from the statistics package so other users might catch more hidden errors or inconsistencies that may have escaped our eye. Btw, do you know an exact date on Octave 8.1 release?
