I found through unfortunate events that if you lose your XIV data from the My Documents folder there appears to be no way to edit the portrait that's on the server. Despite the server-side public portrait's existence, the default portrait, with default sliders, etc, is presented for editing, and any attempt to edit your portrait overwrites the server-saved public facing portrait. eg;, you can't update your hair in the portrait nor anything else without recreating the portrait from scratch.
The game does not re-save the current server-side portrait locally, and there does not appear to be a way to do so. Honestly blows my mind but I digress.
It's a nightmare for anyone who spent no small amount of time tuning the color and position of lighting, shadow, character and so forth.
