actually, I found a way to reproduce the issue. Pressing the Arduino's reset button right after connecting to the car to change settings seems to do it. I will change the method for breaking out of the failsafe to uploading a different program that resets all EEPROM values to 255, this should be even more reliable than relying on the car's code, and while it's harder for the user, it is unlikely to be used frequently.

I've been unable to reproduce the issue again so I don't know what to fix. I'll leave the "bork buttons" for a little while.
