We can also reinvent the wheel and write yet another generic systray or fork trayer to allow some novel behaviours. One idea in my mind now is to have the systray stay hidden until a tray icon actually shows up. At that moment, it may slide out from the left/right sides to show that icon.

Many applications still use an old style tray icon (e.g. XChat, Hexchat, Vuze, Chromium/Chrome,...) and therefore do not show up on wingpanel. We can either include
trayer
and a default configuration or build our own indicator that hosts tray icons.
