Issue finding radio #6

Baofeng UV-9R. Connected via cable to PC USB. Try to connect and get this error.

I see there is a snap, I strongly dislike snaps so I'd like to get this working if at all possible. I see on the snap page I need to do a sudo command to give the app access to my USB, is there something like that needed for the appimage? What am I missing, or is this radio not supported (it does say beta driver in the desciption).

Read the wiki. Saw that there were issues with the PL-2303 chipset. Even though the cable I had was a genuine Baofeng, it has that chip. I purchased a FTDI chipset cable from bluemax49er's that I found via the wiki. Got it today.. still won't connect. Today I get a radio did not respond error.
