Thanks for the feedback. Obviously, removing ligphoto2 which is a side library, should not remove the complete ubuntu desktop. Can you confirm wich version of ubuntu are you using?
Ubuntu 14.10 LTS. It shouldn't but it does.
Same for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. It also remove couple of software like Blender, Shotwell, wine...
Finally I've removed the gphoto and libghoto uninstall and just override libraries if they are previously installed.
This script removes ubuntu desktop and other software, though this is claimed to work for Ubuntu 14.04:

The command "apt-get remove -y gphoto2 libgphoto2*" is the culprit.
This can be fixed by re-installing ubuntu-desktop, and wine but some users may not notice their desktop being removed during installation...
