You can use the "normal" remote to do that. I'm not even sure if the API allows
to do that.

I may be wrong, but I think the API allows (sorry if this is not what you're
looking for). Look: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?t=70851
I also found action IDs for the subtitle:
showsubtitles Toggle subtitles on or off
nextsubtitle Switch to next subtitle

well, everything can be done with the normal remote, but I think it's nicer to
switch it with one button from the Now playing screen.

This is also discussed here: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?t=78542

Suggestion:
button for open up the XBMC Subtitle script
button for toggle subtitle on/off
button for next subtitle

As a cool bonus feature.
It would be awesome if the button for "toggle subtitle on/off" was "dimmed
down"/less visible (sorry for my bad English) if no subtitles is available.
Same with "button for next subtitle" if only one sub exist.
