full ref name & details entered into Proveit generates a raw url #112

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.First time using Proveit, have not attempted another yet
2.Opened proveit tab
3.entered all info from googlebooks about this book, including a refname
4.populated the references tab, and it showed all the details I entered
5.saved page, and got instead a raw reference at the citation

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
expected fully detailed citation; got only raw citation of googlebooks url

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
OS WinXP, Browser Firefox5.0, don't know how to check the version of Proveit:
not readily discernible.

Please provide any additional information below.
Page I was working on was [[Fred Lieberman]], at the citation for one of his
own books, for which I was creating a cite (currently #7) in the reflist. I'll
leave it as-is for now, so you can see what I wound up with, but I need to fix
it.
Thanks
Pat

The problem was evident at preview, before saving the page, I believe.

I can't reproduce that (also in Firefox 5). When I fill out a book reference,
I get a cite book template as expected.

If I understand right, you're talking about this edit:

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Fredric_Lieberman&diff=next&oldid=4370
88743

As you say, there is a raw URL in a ref tag. Separately (outside of the ref
tag), the edit adds a formatted citation to the book.

I also note that none of the edits to that page say, "edited with ProveIt".
ProveIt includes this by default (this can be overridden) when you use it to
make a change.

I'll go over the steps I used while testing, so you can let me know whether you
did the same (or equivalent).

1. Go to edit page. ProveIt opens minimized.
2. Click "Add a Reference" in ProveIt interface. ProveIt maximizes
3. Choose "Book" from drop-down.
4. Fill in all the desired fields.
5. Click "insert into edit form"

Yes, that is what I did, and no, no prove it edits, that's correct. I may just
be operating the tool incorrectly though, as it's new to me. I will say that
in your progression, what I did not do (and you did not list either) that the
instructions say to do, at 4a, was to select the spot I wanted the ref to land,
before clicking insert into edit form. I did not get that that button was
meant to insert into the Wikipedia edit form, so perhaps that could be more
clearly indicated on the button itself, as a suggestion.
I am trying again right now with another cite, on a different page, and so far
I am experiencing a somewhat different problem...maybe. At Popular
Metaphysics, which I wrote and posted today and added cites to without using
Proveit, I am right now attempting to add a new full book reference using
Proveit. I have populated the various fields on the right hand tab for the new
reference, and this has translated into a title that I can see on the left hand
tab. However, there is no button there that indicates "insert this reference
at cursor", as is outlined in the instructions here, where it says that if that
happens, it's a raw url that needs a name. It's got a name though, so I'm not
clear what I need to do to it to use it in the article. I tried clicking in
the wikipedia edit window where I want the cite to land, and still no button in
proveit to indicate that I can insert it at the cursor. Any ideas? The cite
is currently in Prove it @Reference #10 ref name I gave it is Garvey (though I
do not see that ref name in the left tab of Proveit, just the title is there,
covered in black until I hover my cursor over it. I clicked preview and do not
see it in the preview (still 9 cites there, and no cite# at the point). I'm
going to go ahead & save it and see if somehow it is waiting for me to save
before I can see the template, but my suspicion is that this is where I went
astray before, and that the save action will revert my citation to a raw format
as before. We shall see.

It took long enough to do that I had one of those "loss of session data try
again" warnings. Scrolling down to try again, Proveit then showed only 9
references instead of 10 as it was before I clicked save. Anyhow, I started
over from scratch, as that cite was completely disappeared.
I think I got a step further this time, but still no joy...the citation did
appear on the wikipedia edit window, when I clicked in the screen and the
clicked edit form, and looked good! However, Save yielded the whole citation
inline with the point I checked, and did not add the citation to the reflist
(still 9). I will try tinkering some more.

I checked the revision history and it still doesn't say Provit on my edit
summary, which I did put a note on also.
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Popular_Metaphysics&action=historysubm
it&diff=437188133&oldid=437187459

I see in the diff window that the cite does not have ref tags, and I still have
yet to see any button that specifically says, "insert this reference at cursor"
as noted in the User Guide. I suppose I shall simply add ref tags to the
citation and try again elsewhere in the article. Are you able to discern yet
what I am doing wrong, or what the trouble might be?

aha. use <> on the name entered in the refname field. That could be more
clearly stated on the form, but I get it.

However, that only worked when I edited the that entry by adding the <> to it,
where it had not been entered when first posted. When I did the next cite, I
had already placed the refname within tags, and posting the cite to the wiki
edit window did not duplicate them there. Instead, again, the cite posted in
the right place, but without ref tags.

You're right. I left out the step of selecting where the ref should go, but
that is in fact important.

To see the "insert this reference at cursor" button, you must first click the
reference listed under the reference tab. So, in your case, you click Garvey,
which you mentioned hovering over. It should expand then show two buttons,
"edit this reference" and "insert this reference at cursor."

As a note, if it's incorrect when you click Preview, I would expect it to also
be incorrect when you save.

I don't understand what you mean in comment 6. You should not use "<>" in the
name you choose.

I'm still uncertain why the ref tags are disappearing. Are you using any
Firefox add-ons or other Wikipedia scripts? Try disabling them temporarily to
see if any of these problems are related.

When you add a reference, or insert a citation at cursor, you should make sure
nothing is already highlighted in the regular Wikipedia edit box.

As a note, if you have questions, but don't know if there's a bug, a good place
to ask is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:ProveIt_GT . It also may help
to post screenshots, which you can do with Attach a file.

To clarify, "Attach a file" is for Google Project Hosting. You would use the
regular Wikipedia image capabilities to post a screenshot there.
