On the ToDo list is having a hierarchy of options, starting at category / 
button / 
bar / AutoBar.  Settings an be present or absent on each "layer".  If present 
they 
overide settings higher up the hierarchy.  Once set a setting can also be 
unset.  So 
a checkbox in fact would have 3 settings: not set, checked, unchecked.  Until 
that 
glorious day, most settings live only at one arbitrary point in the hierarchy.
