Where in the process did you encounter an error?
Had originally migrated blog from romsteady.blogspot.com to romsteady.net,
now being told that romsteady.blogspot.com is not available even though
some of my posts are still on the old site (albeit with someone else's name
on them).

Describe the error:
On new domain page, enter "romsteady.blogspot.com".
Told not available.

can you clarify a bit here? do you still own 'http://romsteady.blogspot.com'? 
Can you
log in to your dashboard and see that URL? If so, why is someone else's name 
attached
to that blog?

The blog originated at romsteady.blogspot.com. 

Shortly after I moved my blog to FTP, someone tried to claim the blogspot 
address. 

At this point, I don't think anyone has access to the blog via their control 
panel, but Rom's Rants 
originated at that address.
