block-possibility on chat #508

Please provide detailed Information about the Feature you would like to
see.

I'm getting sick and tired of arrogant peopole claiming they're better than
anyone else, and i'm sick and tired of people picking on me because i actually
have a life. And i can imagine i'm not the only one.
I would like to see a possibility to block communications from certain users,
or a possibility to create another chatbox.

Just consider it, and please react to it, because i don't find this worth it.
People like this have ruined the game for me 3 times already, and if it happens
a fourth time, it will be the last time.

a possible detour for this problem could also be to have a chat moderator
online at all times. and not just someone who can ban people, but someone who
actually has sense of dignity and humanity.

Support the war on cyber-bullying, since it can cost lives

Please rate the importance of your Feature Request *for others*
[Low|Med|High]:

For people with this same problem: extra High
For the rest (and knowing my luck the majority of people): probably extremely
low...

You can access the chatbox of any server without being traced if you have a
cpanel access to it, and it's somewhat private as only the people who know you
would be there would go there.
On the other hand, I like the idea of being able to block people; it would be a
nice addition.

That's actually the point. You have to go private to avoid it, while the people
who actually want to help people, or just want good teamplay via it, want to be
able to be in contact with random people on main chat.
Glad to hear you like the block idea as well

I agree that it would be good idea to have more options in chat. I haven't
encountered the problem you have, however seeing as the game is attracting more
and more attention from younger players, I can't say I'm surprised.

I think it would be nice if you could just /ignore someone to not recieve their
messages, but I think this would bring about the problem of seeing someone else
responding to something you can't see.

So maybe this: All messages from ignored players would show as BLOCKED/hidden
MESSAGE, much like as in case of comments that have recieved too many bad
votes. And you could still look at them if you clicked on a particular message.
I don't know how doable it is in coding sense though.

About the moderators bit, CSA Pikramus is often available on chat, helping new
players. I would think he would certainly be inclined to take action if he saw
what he recognized indecent or bullying behaviour. But I also havent seen any
behaviour of that kind on chat before. On the contrary, most people are quite
nice.

Hope you'll get your peace though. I have had problems with bullies in my life
as well. You can of course just close the chat... but; yeah, why give them
that..

I also support temporarily ignoring people in chat; the ignore list could reset
on login; for the primary purpose of ignoring people that are spamming chat. As
for arrogant people, a much better solution there is to just not let them
bother you -- you're better than that, take the high road. :)

However, due to the nature of how chat currently works, a client-side ignore of
spammers would still allow them to scroll chat off the screen.

That said, *as of yet*, I have not met a chat spammer that didn't stop when
asked. There are some tricks to talking to troublemakers:

  - Ask them *politely* to stop.
  - Acknowledge them, have some small talk with them, explain why we don't do things like spam chat or use darkly colored chat names here.

You see, in general, spammers and troublemakers feel like they can do what they
are doing because they don't care -- they're just in an anonymous group of
usernames. The key is to make them feel like they belong and that we're a
friendly bunch of real humans. Give some personality to the anonymous user
names in chat and spammers will generally stop and just want to be one of the
gang instead.

Of course that's not always true, but so far so good.

For the most part, especially in chat, problems should be solved at their
source, not be treating the symptoms. Perhaps take a more Eastern approach to
your chat problems. :)
