Reversed normals for DAE model since 7.x #857

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
All DAE models are rendered with reversed normals. This has been introduced by
version 7.x as all was working fine in 6.x

Which plugin version are you using? 7.0.1.8244

Which browsers and operating systems are affected?
Probably all. Tested on WinXP/7 - Chrome/Firefox/IE

Please provide any additional information (code snippets/links) below.

Unable to reproduce - can you supply a model (and ideally some associated code)
demonstrating the issue?

Let's be a bit more clear: the shading used to light the models appears to use
the inverse of the polygon normal which, as a consequence, makes all polygons
that should be highlighted, darker and all that should be in the shade,
brighter.

I tested this with a NVidia GPU.

The effect is visible on every Collada model imported via the API, KMZ and even
on all the old 3D buildings.

I recommend you to go through some of the "official" demos while switching
between version 6 and version 7:
http://www.barnabu.co.uk/geapi/flightsim/
http://earth-api-samples.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/examples/kml-fetch-good.html

Please also read this thread
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/3dwh/zFX2bwFsAwQ from the "3D Modeling
for Google Earth & Maps" group. Please ask Mr. CraigD from Google (a colleague
of yours I presume) since he appears to understand what the issue is.

You can also try my application http://www.gefs-online.com and compare with
screen-shots of simply try it with both with 6.x and 7.x

Finally, just browse Google Earth with the old buildings layer on and I am sure
you will end up by noticing something wrong.

If, you need me to be more explicit... well, I will try again.

Xavier Tassin

Some screenshots to help find out what is going on.

This is the Google Earth plugin rendering DAE files exported from Sketchup. In
version 6, they used to look exactly like in Sketchup. The screenshots show the
two rendering (6 and 7) side by side. I am running Chrome on Win7 with a Nvidia
GeForce 610M but had the same result on XP with a GeForce 6800 and a Quadro
4000.

Hi,

Did you manage to confirm/reproduce this issue? Do you need any extra material,
test case?

Regards,

Xavier Tassin
