Custom Search Image Search Returning 500 Errors

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Query custom search API with searchType=image (being called from two 
different accounts from python and node libraries)
2. OR use Google's own API explorer at (fill in your own cx) 
https://developers.google.com/apis-explorer/#p/customsearch/v1/search.cse.list?q
=hello&searchType=image&_h=1&

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Expected results. Instead get 500 error with no useful error message.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

Please provide any additional information below.
Has been happening for at least 5 hours today. Was expecting it to be quickly 
fixed but now I'm concerned it isn't being noticed.

I'm seeing the same issue. This seems completely broken. Even using the NON-API 
google hosted service, you never see any images.

This issue happens whenever I add param searchType=image. Regular search 
without this param works just fine.

This issue affected a large number of users but was fixed and it is still
working fine (for me at least).

Did your search ever work? If not you probably set it up wrong.
