News Scroller in the side bar not showing News items

Seems the whole News plugin is not working correctly
Shows characters eg - "%1 , %2" %date"

fixed.

the first problem appears to be because the news items were set to be published 
in 2100. I've set the code to ignore that and instead use the "associated date" 
as the decider.

the second problem, I appear to have fixed already
