This looks really good. In fact you can align left-vertically and
top-horizontally
with ctrl + f and g in recent svn-versions, but this was done only as a
proof-of-concept.

By the way, I got the icons from openoffice. Would it be a problem to recycle
them?

The first thing, I added your suggestion. See [1] for some results.
The second thing are the icons. What I used here are some stock icons, however
I am
worried they are not available to all users. Another problem with them is, that
I
can't find one for horizontal centering. Regarding yours, they are part of the
Art
Libre Icon Project, but using icons from files is not the very best idea imho.

What does clicking the actual button (as opposed to clicking the drop-down
arrow) do?
Is the arrow really necessary, or could the button itself launch the menu?
Taking a look at Inkscape I've thought a "distribute" menu, just like the
"align"
one, might come in handy for really good-looking maps. Might be a bit over the
top,
though. What do you think?

Clicking the button just does what it's on it. It works like a spreadsheet
border
widget. When you choose one of the menu items, the button gets that icon and
does the
action the next time you click on it. The arrow is necessary since it is the
only way
to combine a tool item with a popup menu. It is pretty much like Tomboys format
tool
menus.
