feature request: basic writing functionality

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Missing functionality seems to be toolbars for basic functionality  like
bold, emphasize/italic, lists, bullets (project resources has an icon
easily confused with bullet list)
2. I'm used to lyx: button for adding a float with table or image with
subtitle would make things widely accessible
3. floating toolbars seem not ideal to me. They hover across text obscuring
it. To me it seems more sensible to clip it to top bar
4. Aaaahhh, were did the pdf go to?

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Today ubuntu 9.10 linux, tomorrow winXP64
using 1 to 2 24" screens

Please provide any additional information below.

Agree on #1. #2 would be a nice feature. For #3 we should look into dockable
toolbars. On #4, a popup blocker may have gotten in the way - the export 
process is
asynchronous. Some browsers will block popups that don't follow from user
interaction. The fix may be to add a "Click to view PDF" link.

This entry will be split into 4, so that each can be tracked separately.
