Agreed, though this is kind of a new scenario, introduced by the iPad, since
most
mobile devices, with the exception of the iPad, wouldn't make very friendly
document
editors.
A mobile version is realistic, but would likely exist as an entirely separate
editor,
in order to maximize the capabilities of the mobile devices, without getting in
the way.
I'll definitely give this a shot once the current version of LaTeX Lab
stabilizes.
This would make a good contribution to this project if anyone is interested -
the
idea is to build a mobile-friendly document editor using GWT
(http://groups.google.com/group/Google-Web-Toolkit/web/gwt-iphone-pretty-tasty).

There is also the possibility of building native iPad app that interfaces with
the server. However, I think a
mobile compatible version of the web app would make more sense for a number of
reasons, and fit
better with the project.

Let me put a very elementary mobile editor in place to get the ball rolling.

Awesome! As a token of appreciation I'll give it a test run this weekend by
writing a 5-10 page paper
using it, if it's ready by then. It probably won't have much math in it,
perhaps an equation or two. Take
your time though. Whenever it gets added, I'll be sure to check it out and
start doing my school work on
it. If it's not up this weekend I'll try writing my paper on the desktop
version.

When the mobile editor is ready will it be automatically redirected from the
same link on the docs.latex
labs.org front page?

I'm hoping to have something up next month on the development site.
BTW, i will have to leave syntax coloring out of the mobile version since
CodeMirror
doesn't yet have support for the iPad.

While we are all waiting for latexlab to work on our ipads, here's a somewhat
painful work-around.
Office^2 HD and Docs^2 HD both allow you to log in to your google docs account
and edit. If you create
a latex file there, then you can save and switch over to the latexlab website
to compile and view the
resulting PDF. The problem with this all is that when you switch back to edit
your code, you have to
reopen the program, reopen the right document, and find your place again. It
works for quick edits, but
you can't write a whole document this way. When the new OS is realeased for the
iPad some of this will
be taken care of with the ability to multitask.
