TEMPORARY WORKAROUND: disable any of the features mentioned in the report.
POSSIBLE CAUSES: the features are almost completely unrelated, the only thing
they appear to have in common is that they all use attribute selectors in their
CSS which target the style attribute.
e.g. hiding the refresh button:
.l.n[style = "margin-left: 4px; "] [class="VP5otc-HT6HAf J-J5-Ji"]:nth-child(4) { display: none !important; }
Since this is a CSS Level 3 Selector parsing issue, it leads me to believe that
this is a bug in Chrome. Can those experiencing this issue please post the
following information so see if there is any pattern:
Chrome version -
Operating System -
Language -

rnevala in Issue 286 found a possible conflict between Adblock Plus for Google
Chrome™ (Beta) and typing in chat. Can others with the issue please confirm
whether or not they are also running this extension. And if so does disabling
it stop the problems?

I am running AdBlock, but disabling the extension does nothing.
The only features of the ones mentioned above that I am using are "Hide Bottom
Toolbar" and "Hide Refresh." I can confirm that with both of them off, typing
in Chat works fine. With one or both of them on, the problem re-appears.

Also, running the following:
Chrome 13.0.782.10 dev
Windows 7 x64

Sadly, disabling AdBlock (2.3.0) doesn't fix the chat issue.
Chrome 13.0.782.4 dev, Mac OS 10.6.7, English

Still not sure what exactly is causing these errors. Whitelisting
mail.google.com fixed it for some but not for others, disabling adblock or
minimalist did it for others. Now I'm getting a similar problem in the comment
boxes on the Gawker blogs (makes me think it's either a browser or an adblock
issue).
I'll be keeping an eye on this over the coming weeks and hopefully a pattern
will show up.

Happy to report that as of Chrome 13.0.782.20 dev, this is no longer an issue!

Great! I can corroborate this. Lets get confirmation from one other person
before I close the issue.

Problem still persists here.
Chromium 14.0.793.0 (88985)
Disabling Adblock doesn't make a difference. But inserting an emoticon regains
the ability to type (and this is how I currently work around the issue)

Yeah, sorry to report that this is broken again in the dev update to 14.0.794.0
:\
But it seems like it's an issue with Chrome.

Copy-paste into the gchat box also works as a workaround for now.

I had the same issue and whitelisting mail.google.com on adblock plus solved
the problem.

The only one of the minimalist options I had chosen was "hide refresh" - once I
unchecked that, the chat typing works again.
