Standalone MPM? #93

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Is there a suggested way to run the MPM as a "standalone" application. Maybe
there is a good way to run it in a separate firefox profile but sort of
disguise access to the browser for that instance, while having MPM startup
initially? Perhaps somebody knows of a way to use prism to launch MPM directly?

I'm hoping to make this as simple as possible for a somewhat high number of
people to use (one at a time, but on constant rotation). Explaining that you
can play out from our MPD system, but you have to open the browser and click
the menu link is simply too complicated for us to convey effectively to so many
people. I apologize if that sounds ridiculous to you but it is the state of
affairs.

Ideally we'd like to have an icon to launch the MPM directly from the desktop
and not confuse people by associating the player with the browser. We're
running this on linux, by the way.

Thanks for a great MPD UI and any thoughts on this situation you might have

Hi,

mpm version 2.0.0 exists as a .zip file and works as a standalone application
(plus the gecko layer). since that version, the support of that feature hasn't
been updated (mostly because I don't have enough time).
Even if you don't want to open the browser, you still have to rely on the gecko
layer for the XUL interface to be interpreted and rendered properly.

said that, there's two solutions:
1 - You may want to use another MPD client.
2 - Gently ask me to reactivate the support of the previously mentioned feature
(standalone app) and by then, help me to reassess the situation and do a bit of
testing.

Thank you

i like the interface and responsiveness of MPM very much and is the client we'd
like to use.

i'm willing to help with testing, if you'd be so kind, and had such generous
amounts of free time, to dedicate some of it to reviving this feature and
addressing whatever small problems may happen to block our path. I also have
development experience (but little with XUL and ff's chrome environment
generally, though i know JS very well), so that helps a lot with testing, and
maybe I could even fix one or two things if nudged in the right direction

thanks anyway for your reply, feel free to email me directly if you'd rather.

Hi Brian,

As for my "free time", I don't have that much, but yes, it's important to give
back to the community whenever this is possible. I'm an open-source lover,
that's why I contribute in the ecosystem.

For the dev itself, thanks for the offer. At the moment the development is a
bit in hold. I just started a new job, and I need to settle a bit. But as soon
as I have a testable version, I'll let you know via this issue.

Thank
