With version 2.1, is there a way to turn *off* the logs by default?

unfortunately not. i will take a note of that and quickly change that and 
upload it
to the SVN. once I do that I will provide some instructions in the wiki on how 
to
make use of the code in the SVN to make an updated phyutility.jar file.

how i use the log (it appends if you do multiple tasks) is to do -log log.txt 
for
everything -- that overrides the default time stamp log name.

I have made the default to just overwrite a logfile called phyutility.log. That 
way
it won't make multiples. This should solve the problem.
