Hmmm... perhaps http://lucky.awardspace.co.uk/home/totem-plugins (details a  
dbus
plugin for totem) is the way to do this...

"d-bus service" plugin seems to have been incorporated in Totem since 
2009-04-01, and
I'm guesing version 2.27.something.

However, I did some brief testing with Totem 2.27.92 and couldn't get the MPRIS
interface to work.

Current versions should work with MPRIS interface, but no success reports yet
