As noted in issues 40 and 23, the list of parameters is very long. One reason
for this is that variables with both parameter names and standard names take up
2 lines. Moreover, there is little use for both (see last comment in issue 40 -
some parameter names cover almost as many platforms as the standard names), and
using both is more confusing than anything. Something to consider would be to
only use one button, labeled by standard names, and when they don't exist
parameter name (can be identified by an asterisk next to the name for
instance). This is an UI change, not a database change (that can still contain
both).

Note that the data extraction codes need to be able to identify if the
selection is based on a standard name or parameter name.
