Dovekey: contextual signal schema and/or limits? #16

The current Dovekey proposal describes a contextual signal being returned by the SSP during the contextual ad request. Is this planned to be arbitrary and opaque in structure to the UA and KV server or is there likely to be some structure to it? What limits to the size might be applied?

Thank you for your interest in Dovekey.

This contextual signal should be arbitrary, constructed by ad tech companies (who may decide to standardize the key format – but don’t have to), to allow for the various use cases of publisher and advertiser ad networks. Ad networks only need to ensure to construct the same key when populating expected bids in KV server and at the time when a browser requests interest group bids from the KV server. We haven’t thought about specific size limits, but there may be some practical constraints chosen by browsers and SSPs due to bandwidth costs and user experience considerations.
