Eddystone Notifications using Kontakt Beacons #93

Closed lizziebenson closed 8 years ago

It is possible to receive an Eddystone notification on a android phone (Galaxy S3) without an app?

I'm using a Kontakt Beacon and have changed the profile from ibeacon to Eddystone and created an action with a 17 character URL, but the only way i can get it to work is to download the Physical Web app.

Any ideas?

There's nothing running on the lowest layers of the Android system that will magically show you notifications of Eddystone-URL beacons. Something has to engage the BLE scanner and find the advertisements the beacon is broadcasting, which generally means an app or a service.

(BTW, http://lizziebensonmarketing.com/ doesn't load for me. It gets caught in an infinite redirect between that URL and http://vpf.ssl-redirect.leadrush.com/landing/sc?rd=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.lizziebensonmarketing.com%2F)

Also, the source code for the app that shows you the notifications is here: https://github.com/google/physical-web

Hi Michael,

Thank you for your quick response.

Having watched Scott Jenson’s video (Introduction to the Physical Web (100 days of Google Dev) – dated 18th July 2015), it seems that I’m a little premature in thinking that the Physical Web is up and running!

I guess until that’s resolved (do know how far away that is?) I’ll continue to use the Physical Web app.

Thank you for the “heads up” on my website. If you were using a smartphone or tablet then the problem maybe the video that’s running on the Home Page. Anyway I’ve contacted my programmer and asked him

to look into the issue.

I daren’t ask what’s running on the higher levels of Android as I have a feeling it’ll go straight over my head. That said if you think it might help my understanding then feel free!

Regards

Clive

@lizziebenson We were able to ship for iOS Chrome quite quickly. We're now in the process of getting it ready for Android. There are a few more levers to pull for Android so it's taking a bit longer that we'd like. But we are certainly working very hard on getting this out. Stay tuned!

Hi Scott,

Thank you for your reply, much appreciate.

I have an iphone 6+ and for some reason wasn’t able to get notifications through iOS Chrome. However, having downloaded the Physical Web app, I can now receive them J

And as you know I did likewise with my Android device (Samsung Galaxy S3).

I appreciate that there’s much work to do and look forward to testing it when it becomes live.

Please keep me in the loop as I’m really looking forward to going to market with it J

Have a great evening.

Regards

Clive

In both cases (Chrome and Physical Web app) you have to pull down the TodayView and 'turn on' the widget. My guess is that you didn't turn on the Chrome widget.

lizziebenson commented 9 years ago

Hi Scott,

My apologies. As I had turned on the Chrome widget, I thought there must be another reason and sure enough the beacon I'm using wasn't configured correctly 😓 That's now been rectified and all is working well. 😎 Great stuff and truly game changing!

Have a great 1st October ....... Clive

This blog post describes the feature in Chrome for iOS, and links to instructions for adding the Today view widget.

Hi Scott,

I'm going to be adding a page to my website dedicated to Proximity Marketing, would I be able to include your video?

Kind regards Clive

For Android users, we also added the ability to detect Eddystone-URL frames in Radius Networks' popular Locate app. Obviously this is a dev tool and not something that common folks will use on Android as if it were integrated with Chrome. But even Chrome for iOS requires users to take several steps before folks detect beacons as discussed in our blog post here.

@lizziebenson of course, thanks for asking!
