Science Gothic is a 4-axis variable font commissioned for Google Fonts, based on the more limited styles of Bank Gothic by Morris Fuller Benton in the 1930s. It was designed by Thomas Phinney, Vassil Kateliev and Brandon Buerkle. It:

includes axes for wght, wdth, slnt, YOPQ
supports extended Latin (incl. Vietnamese) and extended Cyrillic
has true small caps as well as a few other typographic niceties

Requirements:

By opening this issue, I confirm the project meets the following requirements:

[x] The entire font project is available in a Github repository (repo) and licensed under the OFL
[x] The source files are available in the repo
[x] I am the sole copyright author of the entire project, or, all other copyright authors have licensed their work to me under the OFL
[x] There are no "Reserved Font Names" in the OFL license information, or in the project documentation of any known upstream projects. If there are RFNs, they are not used in whole or in part in this family name, or, I want to discuss how Google can work with my use of them.
[x] The family name is unique according to namecheck.fontdata.com
[x] The font supports at least the Google Fonts 'Latin Core' glyphset from github.com/googlefonts/glyphsets (direct link)
[ ] The repo has the Google Fonts preferred upstream repo structure
[x] I have read, agree with, and comply with, the full Google Fonts contributing requirements
[x] I will maintain the repository and participate in the onboarding process (addressing, solving, and responding to issues, merging pull requests, etc)

We have been a bit distracted lately with special icon (and now icons plural) for a new Google project, as well as an unsurprising rush of new icons needed before Google I/O. I expect to be largely clear of those things in another week

There is a very large amount of less urgent but desired icon work, that I think we could prioritize lower than this. Let me confer with Dave and SeHee.

OK, I conferred with Dave.

Our icon work is ALL a higher priority, including some less urgent aspects. If it is on the schedule and icon-related, it is higher priority than Science Gothic.

I can still chip at Science Gothic just when I need a break or something. But when or if it will be ready to go is unclear to me. Not Q2, highly unlikely Q3, some possibility of Q4. I could update this in six to eight months.

Long-awaited update: this is inching closer, we have been chipping away at it in recent weeks. I currently expect it will be ready for onboarding review no later than September, perhaps even late August.

Oops, sorry, should have updated here.

We had feedback that we should reconsider the Cyrillic for more triangular forms (ironic seeing as co-designer @kateliev is Bulgarian!), and Vassil Kateliev has been doing so in between working on Google/Material Symbols.

But we are within a week or two of being ready for review, I think.
