Super short description of the Font Family:

COLRv1 version of bitcount.typenetwork.com under OFL

What's the status of this?

What's the status of this?

Requires axis registration decisions. We're working on the axes

yanone commented 1 year ago

I asked Petr about the status and got the following response. The takeaway is that it's currently not ready to onboard yet (as the labels accurately reflect):

What's the status of the work (other than Google’s pending axes registrations)? Is any work still expected on your side at the moment?

Yes, I asked Simon to help with adding multiple shapes in the layers, besides the one gradient set of circles. But I did not hear back from him (in Paris he said that he had little time lately)

Currently there are two layers, but if the total file size permit, another layer could be added too. That again has implication for the axis names. Currently each layer has 3 axes, independent from the other COLRv1 layers and independent from the black mask pixels. That is the ultimate way for not making all the corners for adding axes. These will be the axes for the total project:

Regular black mask pixels wight (Weight = Size of pixels) slnt (Slant = Shifting the pixels. The shape of italics is defined by OT-feature) OPEN (Splitting the pixel in 4 quadrants) SHPE (Shape axis, where pixels morph from one into other: circles, squares, stars, diamonds, crosses, plus, etc.

COLRv1 LR1S (Scaling layer #1) LR1X (Horizontal offset layer #1) LR1Y (Vertical offset layer #1) LR2S (Scaling layer #2) LR2X (Horizontal offset layer #2) LR2Y (Vertical offset layer #2) (possibly a layer #3 with similar 3 axes)

And what about COLRv1? Browsing through the files I could only find traditional b/w fonts that you color in CSS, not COLRv1 fonts. Even the one font that’s named "BitcountGrid_Double4-VF_COLRv1.ttf" didn’t show any signs of color.

I need to check in the latest version.

I make the COLRv1 tests in a very small font (only a couple of glyphs) for speedy compilation. The whole Bitcount takes hours to compile in its complete volume.

The Github issue on google/fonts (https://github.com/google/fonts/issues/5468) says "COLRv1 version of bitcount.typenetwork.com under OFL", but I have the feeling that the COLRv1 description is misleading and they are meant to be colored in CSS or DTP apps.

De documentation needs to be updated still, and also the site. Git is hosting this site in static HTML.

Once I have the full VF running, I plan to add chapters, samples and animations. Also the documentation PDF should be updated with COLRv1 examples.

Noted and discussed with Yanone earlier today. We'll move this out from Q2 as more work is required to onboard it.

chrissimpkins commented 1 year ago

Simon will develop make target on upstream repo to compile this family.

vv-monsalve commented 1 year ago

Upstream need to review Axis proposals issues current discussion status, participate in them, and implement the new definitions once finished.

vv-monsalve commented 1 year ago

The font takes one second per glyph to render with blackrenderer, which is affecting the usability. This needs to be reviewed with @davelab6.

chrissimpkins commented 1 year ago

Petr is reviewing the latest builds following technical changes to the build process.

simoncozens commented 1 year ago

I just pushed some more, faster builds.

chrissimpkins commented 1 year ago

Any word on Petr's review? What is the status here?

chrissimpkins commented 1 year ago

Dicsussed during our pipeline meeting today. We've requested a reduced design space vs. complexity of colored shapes because of UI responsiveness issues. UI becomes extremely slow with this family.

vv-monsalve commented 1 year ago

Also, we need to decide on the definitions of the custom axes the font is introducing.

chrissimpkins commented 1 year ago

Moving it back to Q4. Let's see if we can continue to make progress on it to consider onboarding this quarter.

vv-monsalve commented 1 year ago

Needs a thorough new revision of the axes based don't he latest name used in the font

chrissimpkins commented 11 months ago

Status?

vv-monsalve commented 11 months ago

Axes revision is WIP. We didn't reach to final conclusions on them on our last Axis Registry meeting. Paused at decisions on combining "Paint" + "Size"

chrissimpkins commented 11 months ago

I'm going to label this as blocked until we have definitive feedback on resolution of the text rendering performance issues in this issue tracker thread.

davelab6 commented 9 months ago

@petranblokland please could you share a status and latest expected delivery schedule with key milestones so the team here can plan their time :)

vv-monsalve commented 5 months ago

At the last Axis Registry meeting, we discussed we'll continue with the onboarding process of the fonts as they are now and review their performance in Sandbox.

Waiting for the design to work on the reported issues

chrissimpkins commented 1 month ago

Going to add it to Q1 and we can move it up to Q4 if there is time and it appears that the dev team is nearing completion of the work on the issues that you reported.
