Hello, I'm SeungYun from Woowa bros.

"Hanna 11 years old" is a font released by Woowa bros inc. for free, like Do Hyeon, Jua, Kirang Haerang, Yeon Sung, etc. which were already listed in the early days of Google Fonts.

We are working on adding the missing fonts to Google Fonts and linking the latest versions to our GitHub repository. As a first step, we would like to add the "Hanna 11 years old" font.

If you have any suggestions for improvements to the repo, please let us know, and we'll follow a similar structure for the rest of our fonts.

===========================

Font Project Git Repo URL: https://github.com/woowabros/Baemin-Hanna-11-years-old

Super short description of the Font Family: Hanna(한나) is a typeface inspired by 1960s and 1970s signs that were cut out with a knife by pasting sheet paper over an acrylic board, giving it a jagged, unformed look. By correcting the uneven spaces between the letters in the initial version, 'Hanna' later underwent a major upgrade in 2015 and became 'Hanna 11 years old'.

Requirements:

Google Fonts will publish only fonts that match its requirements. Please familiarize yourself with the complete documentation in the Google Fonts Guide (GF-Guide) and ensure your font project complies with them before submitting the font family. You can also use the Google Fonts Project Template, which will help you create a repository that follows the needed structure and includes build requirements.

By filling this issue, you can confirm the project meets the requirements (by ticking the cases or putting x between the square brackets in text mode):

Attach here a pic or a screenshot of the font. One image is enough, it can be a few letters, to give a quick overview.

@SeungYunCho-WH Thanks for the submission! I added this to the list of new fonts to review for possibly adding to the Google Fonts collection.

I'm not a Hangul expert, so someone who is will need to review this.

Because this typeface includes Hangul, you might be able to get away with not having the GF Latin Core glyphset and instead just include the GF Latin Kernel glyphset. It looks like only U+00AE(®), U+20AC(€), and U+2212(−) are missing in order to have the full GF Latin Kernel glyphset.

@SeungYunCho-WH Thanks for submitting the font! The CJK review group has had a chance to take a look at Hanna 11 years old and wanted to respond.

While the review group recognizes that Hanna is based on a particular style of sign creation, they are concerned about the overall quality of the outlines, and jamo proportionality / design. Additionally, the Latin is significantly more inconsistent compared to the Hangeul design and would need to be replaced entirely.

Unfortunately, they have decided not to move forward with onboarding Hanna 11 years old at this time. Feel free to resubmit in the future if you choose to make further improvements to the font!

Thank you again for the submission!

@aaronbell Thanks for the feedback!

For future font improvements, could you tell us a little more about the weaknesses of the font in question? It would be helpful if you could share more about the reasoning behind the review group's decision.

Hi @SeungYunCho-WH, I've gathered a few comments from the reviewers:

Hangeul: While this design is based on historical sign designs, it (perhaps) tries to align too closely to the historical models, creating inconsistencies in letterform, letters, and jamo sizing. As a result, text looks zigzagged and uneven. The team feels that contemporary legibility and readability should be more considered in the project.

Latin: Significant inconsistency in black & white density, counter spaces, and letterforms. Additional technical issues in terms of baseline alignment. Overall feels ill-matching to Hangeul design.

Cheers

@SeungYunCho-WH please accept my apologies for not tending to this for the past year or do. @aaronbell is just about to start tending to some CJK issues in this repo, so he will take another look at this - I see the design as more like https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Bahianita and useful for graphic designers in certain informal situations
