Font Project Git Repo URL:

https://github.com/AlistairMcCready/Special-Gothic

Super short description of the Font Family:

Special Gothic is a multi-width sans serif typeface built as a contemporary reimagining of the raw tenacity offered up by early 20th century Gothic type styles.

Requirements:

Google Fonts will publish only fonts that match its requirements. Please familiarize yourself with the complete documentation in the Google Fonts Guide (GF-Guide) and ensure your font project complies with them before submitting the font family. You can also use the Google Fonts Project Template, which will help you create a repository that follows the needed structure and includes build requirements.

By filling this issue, you can confirm the project meets the requirements (by ticking the cases or putting x between the square brackets in text mode):

Hi @AlistairMcCready, thanks for your submission. It will be reviewed in the next month or so, and we'll get back to you if it got accepted or rejected. I can anticipate that the build for wght and wdth axis might be complicated with 3 masters, you may need to add masters as each corners of the design space so we can build with our tools.

AlistairMcCready commented 1 year ago

Thank you for the update @RosaWagner! Just to let you know the family is actually 3 masters and 3 instances at those locations, there are no variable fonts planned for this family.

RosaWagner commented 1 year ago

Hi @AlistairMcCready, 3 instances would simplify the work. Expect the naming to change since Condensed, Expanded and Normal are considered 3 different single-style families; therefore they would have to all be Regular. This is the chapter explaining the naming for single-style families: https://googlefonts.github.io/gf-guide/statics.html#single-weight-families

AlistairMcCready commented 1 year ago

Sure thing, is that something we should take care of or will that be done by Google?

eliheuer commented 1 year ago

I just reviewed the source file, looks good, @AlistairMcCready Google could make the change if you don't want to.

We will review this today!

AlistairMcCready commented 1 year ago

Awesome thank you. Great to see the wheels turning!

chrissimpkins commented 1 year ago

Thanks for the recommendation! Added to our Q1 2024 onboarding queue.

ckukahiko commented 6 months ago

Hey there @eliheuer, @RosaWagner & @chrissimpkins. Could we get an update on this? We'd love to start using Special Gothic in our decks. Thanks!

davelab6 commented 6 months ago

Sadly, Rosalie and Eli have both now moved on from working on onboarding with us, but we can assign other folks.

Currently your v1 release has:

This is suitable for Adobe apps, but not Microsoft apps, where the only styles allowed in a family are the 9 weights from Thin 100 to Black 900. Therefore the width name particle has to move to the family section, and the weight has to reset to Regular, so they will be like this:

And show up in GF and Workspace as 3 separate, single-weight, families.

Our onboarding folks can make the changes for this in the source files and make a PR to your repo, and once accepted, then onboard the TTFs into github.com/google/fonts and then into our systems.

AlistairMcCready commented 6 months ago

Hi Dave,

I’ve chatted with Wei (our mastering guy) on this and it would probably be simplest if your onboarding team can make the changes at your end, and we can then accept the PR when it comes through. Does this work for you?

Thanks, —Alistair

Pulling three random styles out of what is obviously a larger family just smells like a PR stunt.

There should probably be at least 12 styles in the family. Add a SemiBold (600) to each width. Condensed (4) + Normal (4) + Expanded (4) = 12

And if the actual source was available, rather than just three styles exported as "masters", there could also be additional widths. And a variable font.

Anyone finding these on GF would wonder where all the other fonts are. I found seven of the nine styles (or 12).

Special-Gothic-7-styles

p.s. According to GF font naming rules these should be:

Of course that would be confusing to users.

Hey @emmamarichal, @davelab6 & @chrissimpkins, just checking in to see how this is coming along. I believe we're nearly at the end of Q3, right? =D crosses fingers

emmamarichal commented 1 month ago

Hi @ckukahiko, yes sorry for the delay, we had a lot of projects this quarter, and we will probably have to move it to Q4.

ckukahiko commented 1 month ago

Hey @emmamarichal, @davelab6 & @chrissimpkins - just want to let you know that @weiweihuanghuang should be updating everything within the next week or so - moving away from a variable font and uploading the three separate font styles as recommended. So once he does, all we should need is for you folks to check our work and then hopefully approve and deploy the three versions of Special Gothic! I'll check back in once Wei does his thing. Thanks!

emmamarichal commented 1 month ago

Hi @ckukahiko! Alright, thank you for the update! :)

weiweihuanghuang commented 1 month ago

Just checking what would be the best way to implement the changes suggested from https://github.com/google/fonts/issues/6928#issuecomment-2102714557

Can we use the one .glyphs file and change the config.yaml to generate three seperate families or will it now need 3 seperate repositories?

emmamarichal commented 1 month ago

Please keep the same repo :) You can have 3 .glyphs files in the same repository. But keep one for now, I want to try if I can export them from the same source file.

weiweihuanghuang commented 1 week ago

Hey @emmamarichal just wondering if you've had time to look at exporting from the same source or if you can provide some instruction on how I can make that work too? Thank you!

emmamarichal commented 1 day ago

Hi @weiweihuanghuang, I will split the files, but we can use only one command to export the 3 fonts at the same time.

Just to sum up, there will be three families onboarded:

Let me know if you have any questions!
