Generating Guideline versions is something we can already do automatically with the builder2 branch. It's currently turned off in the config file, simply because it's a distraction when we're trying to get the basic fonts right, but it's easy enough to turn it on when we're ready.
I have a mechanism for generating nice dotted handwriting fonts with dot collision avoidance, equal spacing of dots, etc. that I have been developing in collaboration with SIL. It's called Dotter and is based on open path skeletons.
So if we want to use the Dotter system to generated dotted versions, TT will need to draw a skeleton layer for all of their existing glyphs. They then need to use the Pendot Designer script (part of the Dotter repo above, installation instructions in the readme) to decide on and store the best settings for dot sizing and spacing, and I can take it from there. Happy to take people through the Dotter system, but let's see if there's any interest in drawing these open path skeletons first.
Dotted is pushed back to 2025. We need new TypeTogether designs before we can do this as Simon mentioned above.
Guidelines planning in progress for H2 2024.
There are open questions that need to be addressed to decide how to continue with the Guides version.
Adding the Guidelines versions onboarding to Q4 2024
Dotted is currently planned in 2025
Separating into different issue trackers for the Guidelines and Dotted versions because the development timelines are very different.
The Dotted versions tracker is now @ https://github.com/google/fonts/issues/8259
We've decided that we will ship these families as a full set of new "Guidelines" families, one for each of the Playwrite handwriting models.

This is a tracker for the guideline versions of the Playwrite handwriting education families. These designs are an expansion beyond the default designs that we shipped in #6449
