Issues with Google Font Roboto Flex (Variable), After Effects Crashes #8059

Two of my colleagues and I are all having issues with this font in After Effects (2022,2023,2024), on Windows 10/11 and a Macbook Pro (Apple M2 Max). Either the font doesn't show up as it's supposed to (ExtraBold Italic) or it completely crashes After Effects whenever we use the font. It seems to only be an issue with this font.

I uninstalled the variable font and opened an After Effects Template, and was able to use a variety of other fonts without issue. On all computers. Then I restarted the computer, reinstalled font and tried to use it again in After Effects. As soon as the font is changed to Roboto Flex the computer often lags and then crashes.

Now, this only seems to be a big issue when using complex templates with layers of editable text, but it's seems to happen with 90% of downloaded templates. If I just create a very simple line of text with Roboto Flex in After Effects and animate it, the text doesn't crash After Effects. However, even with one simple line of the text, the font often doesn't show as it's supposed to (ExtraBold Italic isn't as bold as it shows up online/in Illustrator). But, then other times when I create another project with the font, and it suddenly shows up correctly but I have no idea why it works that time.

I would like to reiterate though, I can use all of these same templates just fine with other fonts, it only has issues with Roboto Flex, especially the bold selection. So it is not an issue with the templates.

I have not encountered the same crashes with this font on my computer, but it happens constantly on my colleagues' computers. Hoever, I do encounter the issue where the ExtraBold Font doesn't show up as bold as it should. Now the only difference between my colleagues' computers and mine is likely the power of my computer. I have 128 GB of RAM (excessive), AMD Ryzen 9 5950X, 3080 TI. My other colleagues have less RAM (64 and 32) and less powerful graphics cards and processors (3060 TI/Ryzen 7). I'm also on Windows 10, my PC colleague has Windows 11, all up to date drivers, Hardware accelerated GPU turned off, etc. However, their computers work fine with the templates when using any other font, their computers have no issue processing and rendering the templates. Is it an issue with processors/RAM not being enough to handle the muliplte layers of variable Roboto Flex text/effects in projects? Is it somehow required to have more processing power or RAM to render this font successfully?

Sorry if this is not the right place to post, I have sent the crash reports to Adobe as well. I can't seem to figure out how to have our team use this font and fix this issue, and we need it use it for our company.

Thanks!

Hi, @legoose700, thanks for your report. Could you provide a video showing the situation?
