I'm using Google Authenticator version 4.74 in Nexus 9 Android 7.1.1 and Google Authenticator could not scan a barcode with the message: "Barcode scanner is not available now" while Duo Mobile and Authy could scan the barcode smoothly for 2FA.

@ThomasHabets , I have already installed https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.zxing.client.android .

Google Search for this message brought me here. Sweet, it's closed. Strange how that doesn't fix it.

@georgehank please actually read bugs before commenting.

1) You're commenting on the wrong project 2) There is a link right there to the still open bug with the right project. It was no accident that I closed right after linking. 3) The bug is even marked as duplicate AND invalid.

I installed Google Authenticator (Android M), and the first time I attempted to scan a barcode, I got this error. I reset the device, and then tried again, at which point it prompted for camera permission. After granting this, it worked.

johndunne commented 6 years ago

Keep your finger on the app, and when the menu appears, tap 'App Info'. Then go into permissions. You'll likely see the Camera permissions is unchecked. Check it and all things are good again.

Used a similar approach as CJBS. Disabled permissions and re-enabled them after prompt.

To solve this problem;

on both the Google Authenticator App and the Bar-code Scanner App, _go to setting-apps-(and for both these two apps) allow/give ALLLL the available permissions "TO ONLY THESE TWO APPS", try scanning again, it should work. if it worked, you can go back and remove those Permissions, it will still work just fine, unless you want to scan ANOTHER barcode AGAIN, then just repeat as above.

This worked for me https://support.google.com/accounts/thread/32502574?hl=en

In my case it was Firefox mobile browser that somehow caused this. Fixed it by going to Firefox mobile Settings -> Accessibility, and turning off the "QR code reader" setting.
