I agree that we should move the project towards stable rust.

Would it be useful to file a bug to track the effort (and reference it from the commits)?

Yes, that would probably make sense. I think it is only the benchmarks we need to figure out how to run on stable, and for now we can simply disable them.

I will look at it after this is merged.
