updates to compile on latest nightly #9

There are still various deprecation warnings, but it compiles.

Also, once/if this gets merged I'll rebase and update #8

Hi!

Thanks, I had some local changes and did an update to master myself in parallel with this, so this may not be needed now.

I gave up on trying to upgrade to stable this time around, as some of the APIs we use still seem to be unstable. Seems that this project hits a lot of API surface after all :-) Maybe next time.

Please rebase, and see if the current master suffice.

I'm closing this pull request. I did eventually get up to nightly, but not on stable. Thanks for the effort anyway, and sorry it did not merge well (which wasn't your fault).
